The Brown Bag Has Breaking News

July 1, 2010

Last week we attended a fabulous presentation by the Atlantic Monthly, the National Journal and Allstate insurance entitled, "Millennials in the Next Economy". We will be discussing this event along with the meaning behind the statistics.

If you market to this demographic, you need to hear what we learned last week.

If you RSVP, we will provide you a copy of the survey results. Don't miss it!

What Our Clients Say:

"Working with you was a total blast. You understood what I was trying to do and made it easy to get my plan done.

I thought that working long distance would be a problem but your internet portal and on-line meetings worked great. As a first time business owner, you had answers to my questions and made me feel at ease.

Thanks for the great support! "

Customer Service Hall of Shame

MSNBC and Zogby just released their 'Customer Service Hall of Shame'. You won't be surprised by who made the cut:
  1. Sprint
  2. Bank of America
  3. Comcast
  4. Time Warner Cable
  5. AT&T
  6. Citibank
  7. Wal-Mart
  8. Verizon
  9. Wells Fargo
  10. DirectTV

Three large banks, three large cell phone providers and three cable television services with Wal-Mart thrown in. The bigger they are, the worse they are. While it may be impossible to not deal with the cable or cellular providers (since they all seem to be equally bad), you can do something about your bank. We've been banking with small, community banks for years and would never go back to a large retail bank. A small bank, like any small business has to look after their customers or somebody else will.

That's the lesson here. We don't have to put up with bad service. Every time you get out your wallet, swipe your credit card or sign a contract you're voting for the company you're doing business with. Since you have a vote: Vote small and vote local. Small business create most of the jobs in America. They're owned by your neighbor and employ your neighbor. They enrich the local tax base. They stabilize the community.

By contrast, Wal-Mart, where a lot of people reading these words shop, almost never sets up a store without getting huge tax and zoning concessions, meaning little local tax revenue. Then they drive local stores out of business with artificially low prices which are raised when competition subsides. More than a few communities have been trashed by Wal-Marts.

Think of that next time your standing on-line and getting crappy service.

If we keep rewarding these companies with our business, they will never do better. At the same time, we do harm to ourselves and our communities. Choose small and choose local.
